Curriculum for Extended Sessions

The goal of this seminar is to provide musicians with the tools necessary for a successful experience in musical composition. It is open to all instrumentalists and singers, regardless of previous compositional experience or genre of musical interest.

The curriculum of this seminar will offer students an introduction to the skills needed for composition, as well as private tutoring throughout their creative process.

Topics will include:
Inner Hearing
Understanding Chord Structures and Resolutions
Sequencing of Melodic pitches
Rhythm
Articulations and Dynamics
Musical Structure
Theatricality
Musical Theory for Composition

Students will be expected to be able to work on their own to produce compositions to be worked on during in-person and on-line lessons.

Students may use Finale or Sibelius notation programs or handwritten manuscripts. Students must provide their own computers, the installed programs necessary, and have an active functioning Skype account for on-line lessons.
